Japan 2013: Episode 5

June 9

Just another day at the beach

A pretty quiet day for us. Olivia went to bed at 9 and woke up at 6 am disappointed, "I woke up early again!" When she counted out 9 hours of sleep she realized it was a pretty good night's sleep after all.

Freshly energized and with hours to spend before church, Liv started on a Tree Climbing walk, trying out some of those we have been driving by near the hotel.

We went to church at the chapel on Torii Station, a bible teaching church with few attendees, maybe 20 all together. Even so, the message was a good one about "The Doubting Baptist" on a passage from Luke 7. John the baptist, who's mission in life was to announce the arrival of the Messiah, questioned if Jesus was really the one because John's expectation of what would happen when the Messiah arrived didn't match Jesus' approach. Relating to our walk as Christians, the message was that we can encounter doubts. Many of us don't have the same faith as when we first became believers, it grows and changes with time, maturity and experiences.

After church we spent another afternoon at the beach. We invested in a snorkel set for Olivia and booties to protect our feet from potentially sharp coral bits and some dangerous sea creatures, like sea cucumbers and urchins. The tide was particularly low, so we were able to wander out quite a distance from shore in waters only about three feet deep.

When I sat still on the beach and looked around, I was amazed by how many hermit crabs there are. Chances are, if you see a pretty shell, it has a hermit crab inside. While watching the hermit crabs, we found this little guy scurrying across the beach. He would take a few steps facing one direction, then turn around and take a few more facing the other direction. Don't worry, we didn't get too close. The camera has nice zoom :)

He hid inside the beach chairs. Hope the next person to use them doesn't get pinched!
