Japan 2013: Episode 2

June 6

Our first full day in Japan

A good night's sleep on a proper bed was just what we needed. Refreshed and ready for a new day in a new place, the adventure began right outside our door at the hotel. Jim and Olivia wandered into the yard and found a few things of interest.

A fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar

A cicada shell

A banyon tree

Good for climbing

Liv has eyed about 10 of these she intends to conquer

Jim took us around the Kadena Air Force base where our hotel is to point out places we might enjoy including the Library, an arts and crafts building, a swimming pool, and the BX (Base exchange, as they are called in the Air Force). This is one of the bigger bases on the island, so it has the BX (shopping center with anything we could ever need) and Commissary (grocery store). I do believe it will take some time for me to get used to the traffic... cars being on the wrong side of the road and all.

I'm in the passenger seat :)

Fun sighting on our travels
We went out for lunch at a Sushi Go-Round. The staff didn't speak English, but were helpful in pointing out how to use the ordering screen. They gave us an English menu with pictures to help identify what each of the items was. The color of plate identified how much the item cost. Most were pretty good, if not the highest quality of sushi available. Jim found a couple of interesting items... One was on the conveyor belt, and was decidedly awful. "Horrid" is the word he chooses to describe. The other wasn't quite as bad, and chosen simply for its interesting name in English "Salted Squid Guts". It was, well, salty! Generally though it was a fun experience with mostly good things.

The ones with yellow are "Fluffy Omelet." Also pictured are (left to right): Egg Salad Roll, Crab, a Fluffy Egg Roll, and Cucumber and Plum Poll.

My Handsome Hunny :)

We stopped in a public restroom and found this. Looks a bit like the one from Mater's adventures in Cars 2?

After dinner we stopped at Torii Station, where Jim lives and works. We visited his room and went for a stroll on the beach. The sand is soft but mixed with bits of coral. Liv enjoyed playing with the seaweed.

"Sea Salad"

Thanks to Mike & Sue Kaus, we had a kite that flew wonderfully!

Pretty flowers near the beach

  1. What a great day! Thanks for telling us about your adventures so we live a little of it here in our imaginations. We loved the picture of the Japanese toilet and the sushi. The sushi looked huge. Is it bigger than the sushi we normally get here? Hooray that you got the kite and that it was able to be used right away!

  2. Becky, The toilet made me chuckle.. did you try all the fun features like Mater? What an experience that would be! LOL. Miss you guys like crazy already but you're doing an amazing job with the blog, I almost feel like I'm there with you.

Liv, I LOVE the banyon trees as well- looks like something Mike would want to race you to the top of! Do you think they can survive here? Maybe we should plant one in our yard for future contests.. ;)

Jim, while your flare for adventurous food choices (i.e. the horrid conveyor sushi and gross looking squid guts) proves to be highly entertaining, it might not bode well for your alimentary canal.. :)

BIG hugs and puppy kisses to you all!!
